How Do You Know if Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning?

Modern heating and cooling systems often work so well that it is easy to forget about routine maintenance like cleaning. Regular cleaning of air ducts, however, helps to keep the heating and cooling system running properly and safely.

Some homes and businesses will need to air duct cleanings more frequently than others. Buildings that are located in a dusty environment or that have pets living in them will need to be cleaned more often. Dust from the environment, as well as pet hair and dander, all accumulate in air ducts over time.

Let’s take a look at some of the signs that your air ducts need cleaning.

Check Vent Covers

Look at vent covers and inside the ducts either by removing the vent cover or using a flashlight. Any buildup of dirt, dust, pet hair or mold near the vents indicates that the air ducts need to be thoroughly cleaned. Be sure to check the return air vents as well, as they could have accumulated much of the same type of build up while taking air back to your furnace or air conditioner system.

Visually Inspect Filters

Check the air filters for the heating and cooling system. Filters that are heavily coated in dust or hair restrict the air flow through your ducts, in turn allowing more dust, hair and dander to settle in the ducts. If the filter is blocked and needs to be cleaned or replaced, it’s a good indication that your air ducts may need to be cleaned as well.

Look at Internal Components

Take a look at the air conditioning coil and furnace blower motors. Inspecting these areas may require removing a cover, but any signs of dust or hair in these areas also indicate that the ducts need to be cleaned.

Unwanted Intruders

Evidence of rodents or other pests in the air ducts is also a sign that the ducts need to be cleaned. There are health risks associated with rodents and pests living in air ducts, and having a professional cleaning is essential to remove animals – and their waste – from the ducts.

Equal Airflow

Ducts that are dirty may also have reduced airflow. Check to see if the amount of air coming out of different ducts is equal. As dust, hair and other debris accumulate in ducts it can restrict the flow of air. This can result in different airflow rates through different sections of ductwork, meaning that one vent may have a significantly diminished volume of air coming out.
