Whether we’re sleeping, relaxing after a long day of work or entertaining guests, our homes are rarely empty. Because we spend so much time in our homes, it’s important to keep the air inside them clean and free of harmful pollutants. Fortunately, there are a number of simple steps homeowners can take to eliminate airborne pollutants and breathe clean, healthy air.
Change HVAC Filters
If you haven’t changed your furnace’s HVAC filter in a couple months, it’s time for a change. This is especially important if you have pets or wall-to-wall carpeting. A dirty filter can cause your HVAC system to kick up airborne pollutants and aggravate allergies and other respiratory issues. Replacing a dirty filter will not only reduce air pollution, but also reduce the strain on your HVAC system and save you money on your energy bills.
Give Dogs a Bath
As much as we love our canine companions, there’s no doubt that they can get pretty stinky sometimes. Dogs are magnets for allergens, so it’s important to keep them as clean as possible. If you don’t want to pay to take them to a groomer, just give them a bath in a kiddie pool the back yard. If you have a long-haired breed, you can brush your dog to keep loose hair to a minimum as well.
Open Your Windows
Indoor air can get stale and stagnant if you don’t let some fresh air in every now and then. Pick a day when the pollen count is low to leave your windows open and encourage an exchange of air between the indoors and outdoors. You might be surprised at what a difference a little fresh air can make!
